Years ago, I worked full-time as medical social worker in home healthcare and once or twice a month, I would work weekends at the hospital to gain some more experience as a hospital social worker.
I had a patient to meet who was young man in his early 20’s and he had a number of health issues and had no health insurance. This young man was most concerned about his girlfriend who was pregnant and needed community resources.
After educating this young man on all the available resources that he and his girlfriend would qualify, I saw God at work. I thought it was so sweet that he wasn’t thinking only of himself, but his was mostly concerned about his girlfriend and his little baby. After our visit, he thanked me profusely and was so appreciative of my time and all the information that will help his family.
A Moment of Truth
I love helping people. It’s just who I am and how God wired me up. As I was leaving this young man’s hospital room, I saw a tattoo on his arm in extra-large cursive letters that said, “Trust No One.”
As a Christian, if I said anything about my faith to a patient first, I could risk getting fired. Well, as I was leaving his room, I said, “You might need to amend your tattoo.” He questioned what I meant.
I told him, “You can ALWAYS trust God! He will never let you down.” God cared enough about this young man and his girlfriend that he sent me to be his medical social worker for that day. I was the only Christian social worker working at the hospital that day. I was so thankful that I was able to help him.
Nothing more was said as I left his room and I never saw that young man again. I love planting seeds…seeds of truth…seeds of God’s truth. God truly loved that young man, his girlfriend and their baby.
I do not know what that young man had been through, but I do know he must have been through some rough times. I know adults had failed him; people had failed him and that was why he had such a tough exterior. But the amazing thing I saw …his heart was tender and still cared for others…his girlfriend and his unborn baby.

THE HARD TRUTH
The hard truth is people will always fail you.
People will let you down.
We don’t mean to, but we just do!
Why? Because we are all human and all of us make mistakes. No one is perfect in this world.
There is only One person who lived on this earth and who lived a perfect life. His name is Jesus.
Jesus showed us …
Jesus showed us how to treat others. He showed us how to love others by His example.
Luke 6:27 – “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you.”
Jesus showed us how to respond to others when they treat us wrong.
1 Peter 2 – “When they hurled their insults at him, he did to retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”
Jesus showed us how much He trusted God
John 5:19 – “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the So also does.”
Jesus showed us who He followed. Jesus only wanted to accomplish His Father’s Will.
Matthew 26:39 – “Going a little father, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
All verses are in NIV.
Jesus Fully Trusted God
Jesus was the Son of God. He fully trusted His life and put His life in God’s hands every day.
If Jesus the Son of God fully trusted God and God’s plans for His life, don’t you think we can trust Him too?
Trust Takes Time
How do you build trust with someone in a relationship?
Does it happen overnight or does it take time?
For most of us, trust takes time!
When you see a person is trustworthy in the small things, you begin to trust them with bigger things.
That is exactly how our relationship of trusting God happens – over time!
We can see how God responds to us in the small things and then watch how He helps us with bigger things. Sometimes He helps us with big things right away.
The best book I read in my 20’s was a book called Trusting God by Jerry Bridges. I will have a link for it in under the Resource section of this blog. This book opened up my eyes in my walk with Jesus and helped me to learn how to trust Him more.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR YOU:
- On a scale on 1 to 10 with 1 being “You don’t trust God at all” and 10 being “You trust God completely,’ what number would you give yourself today?
- On the same scale above from 1 to 10 with 1 being “You don’t trust God at all” and 10 being “You trust God completely,” where would you like to be one year from now?
CHALLENGE:
- If you don’t trust God already; I would encourage you to pray daily and ask God to help you grow in the area of trusting Him. He is trustworthy! God will show Himself faithful to you in the small things, as well as the life changing areas. Will you commit to praying every day for the next 30 days on this very important topic?
- I would encourage you to pick up one of Jerry Bridges resources listed in the HELPFUL RESOURCES below. You won’t regret it! I promise!
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father,
I am learning how to trust you. I may see other people who trust you completely, but I am not there just yet. Please show me how I can trust you in the everyday things – the big things and the small things. Help me to build my faith in you. Teach me how to trust in You more and more each day.
I pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
