Have you ever wondered how God can use you to start a spiritual legacy that will last for generations? As a new Christian, God has so much in store for you! Did you know that God has prepared you in advance to do things that only you can do? His Word says so!
Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
The awesome news is we are not our past! We are not the result of the choices other people have made. God is doing something new! We are a new creation!
Isaiah 43:18-19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Future Generations of Blessings are Coming
I remember hearing the verses below when I was 23 years old in my car. I was so grateful to know that God would allow me and my future family to be blessed because of my obedience to Him; I could start a new spiritual legacy in my family! The verses were:
Exodus 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
Isn’t this exciting news for you and your future family too?
God doesn’t want us to worship anything except Him. Not because He is self-centered, but because He knows what is best for us and that He is the only one who can truly satisfy us!
An idol can be a physical carved object, but it could also include any of the following:
- money
- possessions
- career
- success
- a particular relationship
- Family
- popularity
- power or control
- physical appearance
- family traditions
Did you know we were made to worship God? Does God have first place in all areas of your life?
What is a Generational Sin?
If you are wondering what a generational sin looks like, it could be anything that causes harm to oneself or others. Some generational curses could be the following:
- alcoholism
- divorce
- drug addiction
- pornography
- gambling addiction
- incest
- physical abuse
- verbal abuse
- emotional abuse
- sexual abuse
Generational sin is a part of the fall. Generational sin is a result of not following God and worship Jesus.
How many of the sins above can you see in your life or in the lives of any of your family members? What are your thoughts about starting a new spiritual legacy in your family?

Obedience & Blessing
Here are some incredible verses on obedience and blessing.
Luke 1:50 – His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.”
Joshua 1:8 – “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you can be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
Psalms 119:2 – Blessed are those who keep His statutes and seek Him with all their heart.”
Luke 11:28 – He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
None of us can obey God 100% of the time. It’s just not possible because we are human. But do you see a growing trend in your life that you are obeying God 30%, 50% or 70% more than you did a year ago? five years ago? ten years ago?
What Do Blessings Look Like?
Blessings come in all different shapes and sizes. For me the biggest blessing in my walk with Jesus has been growing in the fruits of the spirit which are:
- love
- joy
- peace
- patience
- kindness
- goodness
- faithfulness
- gentleness
- self-control
Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (NASB)
When I first started walking with God, I didn’t have many of these fruits above. However, after walking with the Lord for the past 33 years, I can say I have seen growth in all of the areas above.
When we read God’s Word and try to do what it says, it changes us from the inside out. God’s Living Word changes us just from us meditating on His Word! We become more like Jesus as we spend time in God’s Word!
Telling the Next Generation!
After you have seen God work in your life, the next thing to do is to tell someone about it! Make sure you tell the next generation! Whether it’s your children, nieces, nephews, your friend’s children. Make sure you tell the next generation!
Joel 1:3 “Tell it to your children and let your children tell it to their children and their children to the next generation.”
Psalms 78:4 – “We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation that praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.”
Deuteronomy 6:7 – “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
When we tell the next generation, we are not only obeying God’s Word, but we are blessing the next generation to come!
All verses are NIV unless otherwise specified.
Reflection Questions:
- Do you want to start a new spiritual legacy in your family?
- Are you worshiping anything more than your relationship with God?
- Are you growing in the fruits of the Spirit when you compare yourself to the person you were five or ten years ago?
- Are you telling the next generation?
Challenge:
- Write down all the things you can’t live without. Pray and ask God if any of these things are idols in your life. Ask the Lord to help you put Him above everything else on your list.
- Write down all of the fruits of the spirit. Rate yourself where you are right now with each one. Write down where you would like to be with each one. Pray and ask God to show you what choices you need to make in order for that to happen.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you so much for loving me. Thank you for wanting to bless me and future generations because of my obedience to you. Help me to make the right choices and follow up verses my own fleshy desires. I pray that you will help me to grow this next year in the fruits of the spirit. Help me to be more disciplined and spend more time with you and in Your Word.
I pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
