God uniquely made YOU! When you were born, God gave you a specific set of gifts and talents. You may be creative or you may love to work with numbers. Whatever the gift you have, God created you with intentionality!
When you accepted Jesus as your Savior, you received a spiritual gift. You probably received several spiritual gifts but one gift in particular will stand out more so than the others. You will also notice that some of your gifts will support your main gift.
For example, you may enjoy teaching others to do something and are very patient. After you accepted Christ, you may find that you really enjoy teaching others about Jesus, and you notice you score high on teaching, knowledge and wisdom. So teaching, knowledge and wisdom may be your top spiritual gifts.
Whatever spiritual gifts you have been given; they are essential to the body of Christ.
No gift is greater or less than another.
1 Corinthians 12:12 – “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.”
God Crafted You for A Purpose
God created you to be a part of the body of Christ. When you use your gifts in the church, you are helping the church to function more effectively.
What would a church look like if everyone was a teacher or if everyone was at working the sound booth? The church would not function properly.
Whatever gifts you have been given, use them to serve the Lord and not man. When you use your gifts, you will glorify God.
Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
It doesn’t matter if you are a teacher, preacher, or the person behind the scenes. Your gift is needed in the body of Christ.
Romans 12:4-5 – “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”
What Are Spiritual Gifts?
A spiritual gift is an ability that God gives a believer to enable him/her to serve the body of Christ. Each person has their own unique combination of gifts.
Depending on the spiritual gift test you take, the number of spiritual gifts may differ. Some of the spiritual gifts I will be talking about today come straight from the verses below.
1 Corinthians 12:8-10 – “To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing but that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and still to another the interpretation of tongues.”
The spiritual gifts above include the following:
- Encouragement
- Discernment
- Faith
- Healing
- Interpretation of tongues
- Knowledge
- Leadership
- Prophecy
- Teaching
- Tongues
- Serving
- Wisdom
Is One Spiritual Gift Better than Another?
Every spiritual gift has equal value in God’s kingdom. Some spiritual gifts may be more seen than others. But no gift is better than another. God specifically chooses the spiritual gifts for each person using His best judgement.
1 Corinthians 12:11 – “All these are the word of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”
Our body would look ridiculous and would not be functional if we all were an arm or a leg. We need the different parts of our body to function.
1 Corinthians 12: 15-18 – “Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for the reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for the reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact, God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.”
When it comes to spiritual gifts, the church needs ALL OF THEM!
Every spiritual gift has a God-given purpose.
What Should You Do with Your Spiritual Gift?
We should use whatever gifts we have to serve one another in the church (the body of Christ).
1 Peter 4:10 – Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
Are you currently a part of a Christ following church? If you are, I would encourage you to talk with someone on staff at your church and ask them what areas they would recommend for you to use your gifts.
If you aren’t apart of a Bible believing church, it would be great to start looking for one to attend.
If You Are the First-Generation Christian in Your Family:
As a First-Generation Christian or one of the first Christians in your family to accept Jesus, spiritual gifts may sound foreign to you.
I can tell you that when you use your gifts to serve the body of Christ, you will experience a peace and joy like never before. It will feel as if you were made to do whatever you are gifted in.
Certain things will come so easily for you, but we shouldn’t take our gifts for granted.
We need to always keep in mind the following:
- who gave you those spiritual gifts
- when you use them, use your gifts to serve God and not man
- no spiritual gift is better or worse than another
- all spiritual gifts have equal value in God’s eyes
All verses are NIV unless otherwise specified.

Reflection Questions for You:
- Are you aware of the spiritual gifts that God has given to you?
- Do you appreciate the gifts the Lord God has given to you?
- Are you using your spiritual gifts to build up the body of Christ?
- Does God want you to do anything different with your gifts?
Challenge:
- If you haven’t completed a spiritual gifts test, I would encourage you to do so. Here is one test that is free and it just takes a few minutes to complete.Spiritual Gifts Test – Discover your spiritual gifts! This spiritual gift test will include twenty spiritual gifts.
- If you aren’t a part of Christ following church, find one. I will share in another blog what to look for in a Bible believing church.
- Talk to someone on staff at your church and let them know about the spiritual gifts you have. Ask them where you could use your gifts in the church. You might be surprised with what they say.
- Decide on an area to serve in your church and commit to one ministry year.
- Re-evaluate after a ministry year and chose to either serve in the same area again or choose another place to serve and use your gifts.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for how you made me. Thank you that you chose to give me the specific gifts and talents that you did. I pray to use the gifts you have given to me for good and to build up Your church. Show me where are the best places for me to use my gifts.
I pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
